What appeals to you about roller derby?
Getting together with a great bunch of girls to train hard and have the craic. It’s the only sport where you dress up and put on makeup to play!! I love the speed, the sense of elation you get when you pull a perfect tomahawk and your ankles are unbroken. Getting to say you are a badass because you are a roller girl.
Are there any derby players or other sports people who inspire you and why?
My trainer Catherine Costigan inspires me to be the best derby player I can. She is a kickboxing champion who is always positive with a “can-do” attitude towards everything.

It’s a new year which means new Fresh Meat!
… If you’re looking for something different to do in 2012, look no further. Limerick Roller Girls, Limerick’s Roller Derby League are holding tryouts on February 18th and there will be two skate clinics to show you all the skills you’ll need to make the league.
***As there is a limited amount of gear please email limerickrollerderby@gmail.com to book your spot at the clinic***
The clinic is a 2-hour session in which we will cover basic skating skills such as stance, stride, crossovers, stops, and falls. It’s also an opportunity to have all your questions answered - whether they’re about training sessions, buying skates and gear, getting involved, or roller derby in general.
Skate Clinics are aimed at anyone hoping to join the LKRG as a skating member, referee or NSO and they’re open to anyone (male or female) over 18years old.
***As there is a limited amount of gear please email limerickrollerderby@gmail.com to book your spot at the clinic***
Caroline and Aisling will be coaching the clinics which will be held in Rollerjam.
Each clinic will cost 10euro per person, skates will be available but if you have your own please feel free to bring them along.
You will also need knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouth guard. You MUST bring the mouth guard yourself, they can be found in any sports shop. There is a limited amount of gear which we can loan to you on the day, so please let us know what you’ll need to borrow in your email.

Lots o’ news!!
In Limerick Roller Derby News:
- In the last week we’ve changed our training venue and gone from 2 hours a week of training to four, it’s going to make a big difference. Also, post-training showers on Fridays is always A Good Thing as it will lead to post-training non-stinky socialising!
- A bunch of skaters recently attended a boot camp in Galway and a Skate Clinic in Cork - awesomeness occurred and we now have a lot of very pumped and determined skaters - thanks to the Wicked Wheels of the West, Dublin Roller Girls and the Cork Firebirds - we love you guys!
- We’ve invited some newbies to see what we do over the next couple of weeks, which hopefully means getting some new skaters on the track.
- Keep your eyes peeled for Limerick Roller Girl fundraising happenings in the next couple of months, and if you’re of a mind to sponsor us in any way, email limerickrollerderby@gmail.com
- And speaking of sponsorship, the All-Ireland Roller Derby team need help to get to the first ever Roller Derby World Cup in Toronto this December. If you’d like to buy a t-shirt to help send them there, or just have some shekels to throw their way, head over to http://all-ireland-rollerderby.moonfruit.com/ and help out.
And now the weather: It’s sunny, with some thunderstorms. Thanks for reading!
